You’ve made it to the end. We start with scoring goals, next we wanted to play better all over the ice, and now we are prepared to stop goals from going in our team’s net.
5 Ways to Play Better Defense
(1) Boxing out and picking up sticks - When opposing players are crashing the net, it’s imperative to make sure they are unable to get there untouched. We’re not advocating for major body contact, but staying on the defensive side of the puck and preventing your opponent from having a free pass will go a long way. Your goalie may even buy you a pop.
A simple phrase to remember is, “Position before Possession.”
(2) Backcheck (a little) - The closest most players will get to a puck is immediately after they get the puck taken away. Hit the breaks, stop, and make a few hard strides to get the puck right back. Look, we know it’s beer league, but back pressure matters. Help a goalie (and your defense) out.
(3) Go through sticks - When separating an opponent from the puck, make sure you get the inside body position. Often, the difference between turning the puck over and not is the extra stride. By stopping short and ‘fishing’, you may save a bit of energy, but you’re unlikely to come up with a steal. Take the extra step and go through the opposition’s body and stick.
(4) Sticks in the passing lanes - Offenses that make passes across the royal road have much higher shooting percentages and thus score more goals. Therefore, deterring these passes is critical. Keep pucks away from harm’s way by getting your stick in passing lanes. If you’re unsure where to position your stick, think to yourself where the most dangerous passing lane is and react accordingly. Hey, it could even lead to offense for your team.
(5) Stick on puck - Your hockey stick is your greatest tool; use it. By leading with the blade of your stick, you can quickly take away your opponent’s time and space. By taking a good angle and going stick on puck, you can really take away your opponent’s advantage in a hurry.
