The first step in any process is vital. The first touch and first step in ice hockey is often the critical moment when it comes to creating more positive plays and, ultimately, better offense.
Defenses close space quickly and are quick to get into a formative defensive position. Offenses must take advantage of the split seconds when defenses are vulnerable.
First Step Upon Reception
Where you take your first step is critical to creating offensive chances. The first look and step are toward threatening ice for players who create consistent offense.
This is something where players that may not look the part from a technical standpoint can outproduce on the scoresheet.
Obviously, players should be working to create advantageous conditions before their puck touches so once the puck is received they are an immediate threat.
