Today, I’d like to introduce Hockey Players In Business (HPIB). This is a networking group for hockey players, regardless of the type of player you are/were or the type of business in which you are employed.
“I am a firm believer that we all share a common bond, and that bond is a love for hockey and the community and comradery that goes along with it”, says Kevin Henry, Columbus, Ohio, chapter president.
“This Columbus Chapter will be a way for us to interact socially and to expand our own individual networks. Networking is not always the easiest but walking into a room full of other hockey players automatically breaks the ice and gets the conversation started knowing that you have a common interest with the person across from you.”
What is Hockey Players in Business (HPIB)?
HPIB is a networking association organized as a not-for-profit. Their mission is threefold:
Help hockey players in business to expand their professional network.
Help hockey players in business to further their professional development.
Most importantly, give back to the game of hockey through charitable giving.
How does HPIB achieve its mission?
Access to a fully searchable directory and interactive user forum on its website.
Access to all HPIB chapter events held throughout the year. Members have the opportunity to attend all local, regional, and global HPIB events.
Each year, there is a charity hockey tournament in the Cleveland area. Since its inception, HPIB through all charitable efforts has been able to donate over $115,000
How much does HPIB cost?
HPIB has a $50 annual membership fee (tax-deductible). Some events may require an additional cost to attend, like a pick-up skate with food afterward.
Vision for HPIB:
To have 25,000+ paid annual members throughout the world.
Donate $1M+ annually back to the game of hockey and hockey-related charities.
In The Words of HPIB Members
As we know, talk is cheap and execution is worth its weight in gold. Let’s hear from people actually taking advantage of HPIB.
Mike Schultz, HPIB Member, and Pittsburgh Chapter Director
“After moving to Pittsburgh over a year ago from Cleveland. The events held have helped me connect with other members and enabled me to contribute to the community via charitable donations to organizations such as the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Finally, HPIB has even helped me get on two men’s league hockey teams in the area after my transition.”
Personally, I have had a similar experience going from Cleveland to Columbus. I’ve felt that I was able to plug into the hockey community, build wonderful friendships, source new business, and find great skates.
Michael Jacobus, HPIB Member, Columbus Chapter
Networking is about connecting with people and creating new contacts and friendships with others that share the common bond of hockey.
